Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand

Updated: Apr 5, 2021

When visiting the South Island of New Zealand, you will most likely know Queenstown as the main tourist destination. While you are searching or seeing images in relation to Queenstown, or South Island, you will inevitably come across some images which are actually from Franz Josef Glacier.

You may think, what's so special about this place that I have never heard of? Well, the Franz Josef Glacier, or technically the glacier itself is infamous for climate activists, as the warming of the climate has caused a rapid loss of ice in recent years. Not to say it is not worth visiting, as you will be able to explore the truly phenomenal untouched nature of the world. There are several walking trial and hikes you can take, but the most famous and one you would probably want to see is the infamous glacier, which will be roughly 10 minutes easy walk to the viewing area. There are several other trails including Fox Glacier, however some of the trails may not lead to the glacier, while some go closer. Do your research in advance before picking a trail.

The small town has a small supermarket, and several restaurants to choose from. I chose Snake bites (Asian restaurant) and due to being the holiday period, the waiting time of the food was 1 hour, however the food was great. This small town is mainly dependant of tourism due to its remote location, about 5 hours drive from Queenstown. Anyone looking to backpacking or work while travel, this might be a good spot to stop for a month or two.

We stayed in the Jag Escape Franz Alpine Retreat, which has a variety of configurations including unit, 1 and 2 bedrooms. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they have elected for a no contact check in and check out, so I have not seen the staff throughout my stay but there's someone there in the reception in case you need anything else. The 2 bedroom unit we have booked has a full kitchen facility, however some of the kitchen tools are dirty so they should pay more attention as this is a bad look, worst during a pandemic. The TV remote did not work, while the small TV is nothing to brag about, I suppose it is only a secondary of importance since most people would be staying for short term or overnight.
