I was supposed to fly direct from BKI to DMK with Airasia, however they have cancelled all the direct flights a few weeks before my departure, so I had to look for another option or fly with Airasia through Kuala Lumpur. I thought since I have to transit, I may as well fly another carrier and check out their product.
So here comes the review for Malindo Air, a fairly new premium airline started in 2013 that flies within the Asian region. They operate a fleet of Boeing 737-900ER, Boeing 737-800 and ATR72-600. I will be onboard their Boeing 737-900ER from BKI to KUL.
My first impression, I didn't have anything impressive to say about the crew, nothing that's memorable but I didn't feel anything negative towards them either. Malindo operates on a budget model, pay for what you need, which means check in luggage and food are additional costs.
On their door, they advertise wifi and cell network, which wasn't available after takeoff, I am not sure if that's for a specific route or they haven't yet made available. Each seat comes with personal IFE system, and they advertised a seat pitch of 81cm, the most generous on most narrow body aircraft. I was supposed to be seating on row 24, however a family took over my seats and they swapped me to row 26, which is a windowless row, so unfortunately no takeoff or landing view, but the plus side is that I have the entire row to myself.
I had a look on their menu, I didn't get any food on board since this flight will only be around 2 hours, I did however get a drink. Based on the prices I can see on their menu, it is very reasonable and I wouldn't hesitate to order food or drinks on board if I need it.
The 737-900ER also comes with 3 rows of 2-2 Business Class, which is fairly standard for a narrow body as well. A quick glance allows me to see an adjustable headrest, a small drink table in between the seats, and the seats seem to be very comfortable (however I cannot testify to it until I get to spend some time on it of course).
Conclusion:
Would I fly with Malindo Air again? My answer is yes, even though I did not get exceptional service from the crew, I find the seating to be very comfortable and the IFE is also a good extra to have, especially on a longer flight. The food and drinks are reasonably priced, so I do not mind paying the extra for it.
