Pre pandemic, Air New Zealand have signalled their intention of starting some of the world's longest flights from Auckland to JFK (New York), however with the world shutting their borders in 2020, Air NZ halted their plans to NYC indefinitely. Well, that is no longer the case, today (23rd March 2022), they have officially announced their starting date with availability to book.

Air New Zealand's inaugural flight to New York will be on the 17th September 2022 departing at 7:40pm from Auckland International Airport, a flight time of 16 hours and 15 minutes, arriving JFK New York at 7:55pm. On the return flight, they will be departing JFK at 8:55pm with a flight time of 17 hours and 35 minutes, arriving back in Auckland at 7:30am.
Air New Zealand will be utilising their flagship Boeing 787-9 fleet which made up of the majority of their long haul flights, with some Boeing 777-300ER expected to return to service for the time being to serve some of the other routes in Australia and the West coast of the USA.
While the inbound flight is very appealing as the timing is one of the best for a long haul flight, that can't be said for the outbound flight as people would have lost a full day in the big city and have to spend a night of accommodation.

The cost of the flight starts at NZD$986 for the outbound leg and NZD$993 on the inbound leg, coming to a total of NZD$1979 for a return flight, which is not too bad in comparison to other flights advertised on Air New Zealand, especially having to transit in the West coast to a United flight and costing more. With the limited flight availability in and out of New Zealand right now, the competition is not strong hence the prices would not be competitive either.
When I travelled to the US back in 2019, on Air New Zealand flight booked on United Airlines website, I was able to pay significantly less than on Air New Zealand's website, plus the competition of American Airlines flying here on a regular basis, and other airlines such as Fiji Airways offering connecting flight to the US. Right at this moment, the limited offer of flights plus the direct service will allow them to charge a premium.

In saying that, I am still very keen on jumping on this opportunity to try out this marathon flight to the Big Apple, with a slight hope that my recognition upgrade can be used for the flight. Air New Zealand does not offer a competitive hard product for the premium cabin, with the reverse herringbone on their Business Class, offering no privacy on the very open cacoon with even less privacy if you couldn't score their A seats (left side of the cabin) as you will be facing your neighbour.
Air New Zealand has been hinting at a new Business Class product with an updated Airpoints program, but so far we have not heard of any news in regards as to when they are planning to roll that out.
